(Click the image above for a closer look.)

After you download and fire up namebench, just click the Start Benchmark button to test out a handful of free public DNS services, from Google Public DNS to OpenDNS to UltraDNS. Once started, the test took about 12 minutes to complete using the default settings. When it’s done, you’ll be presented with a handful of handy charts displaying the results of the tests.

Cleaning up WSUS

If you want to purge the downloaded patches on WSUS Server to cleanup / delete unneeded content, then you have to use the following tools;

  • WSUSDebug PurgeUnneededFiles
  • WSUSUTIL.exe Deleteunneededrevisions
  • WSUSUTIL.exe Reset
  • WSUSUTIL.exe Removeinactiveapprovals (optional)

WSUS Debug Tool: Run PurgeUnneededFiles command to Purge unneeded content. This command deletes all files not needed on the WSUS server.

WsusDebugTool.exe /Tool:PurgeUnneededFiles

***(NOTE: You have to decline the updates first.)

WSUSUTIL.exe deleteunneededrevisions: Purges the metadata for unnecessary update revisions from the database. This is useful for managing WSUS with an MSDE database.

***(NOTE: this command should only be run after stopping the Windows Server Update Services website in Internet Information Services MMC.)

WSUSUTIL.exe Reset: Now that you have purged the content, use ‘WSUSUTIL.exe reset’ which checks that every metadata row in the database has corresponding content stored in the file system.  If content is a missing or corrupted, WSUS downloads the content again.

WSUSUTIL.exe reset

***(NOTE: WSUSUTIL.exe is installed C:\Program Files\Update Services\Tools)

MOST IMPORTANT

The option “Download update files to this server only when updates are approved” must be checked / selected or else, it will re-download those “not needed” updates, during the next sychronization schedule.

Open WSUSAdmin Console – Click on Options – Click on Synchronization Options – Scroll down to Update Files and Languages Section - Click on Advanced – Click OK – Select “Download update files to this server only when updates are approved” – Click OK and save settings.

Windows Server Update Services Downloads

This tutorial is going to cover how to add Computers to update services.

The WSUS Help is very very good and its your best friend! So dont forget him Cool

Microsoft suggests to use Group Policy for setting up computers and WSUS in clients. So we set our WSUS details in our Group Policy Object (GPO).

1) Create a new GPO
[Do not edit the default Domain Controller Policy or Default Domain Policy]

2) Edit the newly created GPO
a) Go to Computer Configuration–>Policies–>Windows Components–>Windows Update
b) On the Settings tab (right side)
–> Enable client-side targeting and specify the Computer Group that machines need to be added
–> Under Specify Intranet Microsoft Update Service location, enable it and give your WSUS
address
for both intranet update service and intranet statistics server

3) Specify the Security Filtering for this newly created GPO to the specific Computer or Groups or Users you want it to reflect

4) Link this newly created GPO in your Domain and make it Enforced

5) Restart (may or may not be required) the client machine to which you have set this GPO

6) Login to the client machine and now check the registry settings in the client machine

Below you have the location you want to check,

And check its values,

The TargetGroupWUServer and WUStatusServer should have the values you set in your GPO

So, being said that all are good, now check whether you have set Windows Update to Automatic mode, if not, set it and then Check For Updates. You may be prompted an update to the Windows Update, install it.

Now, go to your server, fire up WSUS Administration Console and go to,
Update Services–>Server–>Computers

Check whether you can actually see the Computer in which you have set up the Intranet Update Service. If you cannot see, wait for sometime (10 to 30 minutes!)

If you see your Computer, but then if it tells your that its status is not yet reported, then, run this on the client Computer (on the command prompt),

wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow

You should now be able to view your computer in the WSUS Administration Console

And finally here is my status of my Computer,

So now, you can play with your WSUS and Windows Server 2008 Laughing

Apple – iPad

Apple has announced pricing information for the iPad on their website. The iPad will be available in 16GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB and have a WiFi model and a WiFi and 3G model.

iPad pricing details:

  • iPad 16 GB with WiFi: $499, with 3G: $629
  • iPad 32 GB with WiFi: $599, with 3G: $729
  • iPad 64 GB with WiFi: $699, with 3G: $829

You can see iPad specs here.

Drawbacks and Limitations

1. No Camera : You are talking about the “next generation personal computer” without a camera?

2. No Multi-Tasking : Your tablet device can’t run two apps at the same time? Can’t I listen to music while browsing the web? Are you crazy?

3. No VoIP service : You are talking about 3G service compatibility, but why didn’t you mention that it can carry only data? No iPhone apps such as Skype can run on this device where you can talk to your friends online.

4. No USB Slots : How do you expect users to transfer data without USB port, external CD drive, etc? And yes, your dock connector is useless (in comparasion to USB ports)

5. No Flash Compatibility : Apple, you really need to grow up! Like iPhone, you also left this device incompatible with Flash which means no flash games can be played or no websites with flash contents can’t be accessed on iPad. Great!!

6. Unprotected Screen : Can you give me a reason, please? May be the Apple guys forgot to provide a screen guard to protect the 9.7″ screen where this drawback might lead to scratches and running applications by hitting the thumb on the icons accidentally.
